HERE’S TO MOMS

By Jimmy Quaile, Certified Sommelier
The ancient Greeks honored mothers by paying tribute to Rhea, the Mother of all gods. The Romans also had a mother of all gods in Cybele. They built a temple in Rome for her. In the U.K. “Mothering Sunday” was a religious holiday to give thanks to the Virgin Mary, also known as Mother Mary. The United States began the tradition much later. In 1908, Anna Jarvis from West Virginia honored her late mother with a letter writing campaign to President Woodrow Wilson, who eventually made it an official holiday in 1914. Curiously Anna Jarvis did not like the commercialization of the holiday she was so instrumental in starting and in fact filed a lawsuit to stop a festival on the day. And although she relished receiving cards and letters from around the world till the day she died, she never married nor did she have children. She was buried next to her mother.
With the holiday just around the corner you may want to start thinking about what you’d like to bring your mom as a gift or to serve with a meal. White Zinfandel or Pino Grigio was the choice of a generation and may still be for lot of moms, however, if you have an adventurous mom, here are a few alternative choices I’m sure she will enjoy. Then again, if you’d like to give her a bottle of wine that you are guaranteed she wants…call your mother.
